[ INGREDIENTS ]

Lentils 1
Butter
Onion
Cumin Seeds
Black Mustard Seeds
Turmeric Powder
Garlic
Green Chili
Ginger Root
Salt
Black Pepper

 

 

 

[ INSTRUCTIONS ]

  1.  Melt :
    1 Tablespoon Butter;
    in a saucepan on medium heat.
  2. Add :
    1 Onion, Finely Chopped;
    and let it cook for 1 minute.
  3. Add :
    1 Teaspoon Cumin Seeds;
    1 Teaspoon Black Mustard Seeds;
    and stir them around with the onions until they sizzle.
  4. Toss in :
    1 Teaspoon Turmeric Powder;
    2 Cloves Garlic, Finely Chopped;
    1 Green Chili, Finely Chopped;
    and cook for 3 to 4 more minutes.
  5. Add :
    1/2 Inch Ginger Root, Grated;
    and stir fry quickly for about 30 seconds.
  6. Add :
    2 Cups Lentils; 1
    along with enough water to cover them, then place a lid on top.
  7. Let everything cook for 20 to 45 minutes, or until the lentils are tender.
  8. Taste the Dal and add :
    Salt, to Taste
    Black Pepper, to Taste;.
  9. You’ll probably need a fair bit of salt to bring out all the flavors - a teaspoon or so.
  10.  If available, top the dish with a splash of cream or some chopped fresh cilantro.

 

 

 

[ NOTE ]

1 Any type of type of lentil will work. If using larger lentils (like chana dal, french lentils, or split mung beans), soak them for 30 minutes to start. If using the small orange lentils, then don’t bother soaking them; they cook very quickly.
